Chemistry Fun

The Locust Lane Chapel was filled with fun, excitement, and chemicals on Thursday evening, 30 July. Jenn Nielson from BYU was kind enough to bring loads of fun chemistry equipment and supplies to show us the exciting ways chemistry works. We were happy to have several visitors from the Sandy Coordinating Council join us.

 Jenn Nielson, the chemistry whiz

Jenn is an extremely entertaining teacher

Mixing chemical compounds creates interesting reactions

 It's exciting to participate

 Green flubber

 A very small flame...

Becomes a flaming tornado with the addition of air

 Super flamable cotton balls

Agitating the compounds caused them to change color

Combining simple ingredients without stirring creates...

A long filament of nylon-like substance

 More willing participants

Pouring super-cold liquid nitrogen on the floor creates a harmless cloud

Brother Thorn tops up the liquid nitrogen

You can't pound a rubber nail into a board unless...

You freeze it in liquid nitrogen

Then you can pound it into the board

Everybody who wanted got to shake the compounds

The air inside the balloon contracts when it is inserted into the cold nitrogen...

  Causing the balloon to contract

As the air inside the balloon warms, it expands and the balloon fills again

Mixing these compounds made them go from clear to colorful and milky

If you heat the canister, put in the lid, cool it on ice, the air inside will contract...

And the very strong canister will crumple like a flimsy soda can

 Elephant toothpaste

A shot of electricity creates "lightning" in the bottle, ignites the gas, and blows the cork sky-high

 Mixing these compounds created luminescence

 We were going to try the liquid nitrogen experiment if there was time;
sadly there wasn't, but the balloons were fun

 Like we said: fun

We were able to visit with Jenn after the presentation

This was a great activity! Special thanks to Jenn Nielson and all who helped make it so much fun.
