It was a beautiful day with no indoor rain to mar the race last Thursday evening the 6th of April for Provo SNAP Sports Car Race Championships in our beautiful Locust Lane Chapel.
We had a wonderful turnout which demonstrated the expert driving skills of our "Cardboard Box Car" drivers. All the engines were two piston motors and various motor sounds, tire screeching, and fans cheering on all the drivers.
Sister Nancy Leishman and Sister Trammell demonstrated the course objectives and Sister Becca Winegar led the first demo lap in her sleek black "Pace Car." Once the green flag started them off Becca rolled off the track and the race was on. Sister Leishman held on to her position in first with Sister Trammell taking advantage and drafting right behind. Sister Leishman was going so fast that on the east turn she literally blew the handles off her car and spun out, sister Trammell took the yellow flag in to the finish and the demo run was over...
Now the real races began. 1st heat of two laps Sister Becca was "pace car" again and led a group of four racers one slow lap, and then our Race Starter Kaydee waved the green flag and they were off.
There were four 2 lap heats where the checkered flag waved in the champions who were selected from each heat to race in the final 4 lap Championship Race. Our heat champions were Cathy, Michael, Micah, and DJ. Cars could only pass on the outside and had to slow down if there was a spinout or some other danger. Cars having mechanical problems went to the mechanic pits where our experienced expert mechanic Meagan duct taped the cars back together again. Our overall champ was DJ, with Michael close behind.
Then we watched part of the video "Herbie Rides Again" and snacked on popcorn. A fun night with a lot of laughs. Our spiritual message was, "....life is like a race and the Savior is our pace car that if we follow Him, shows us how to live our lives and win the race. So we are all champions."
